All New and "Significantly Improved": Wilson Audio's Alexx V

by The Audio Beat | March 29, 2021

stensibly, Wilson Audio's new Alexx V ($135,000 per pair) is an upgraded version of the company's existing Alexx speaker. However, for the Alexx V, Wilson Audio’s R&D team approached it as if were an all-new speaker, reworking elements from the original design in accordance with technologies the company has developed since the older speaker's launch. According to Wilson Audio, "Each and every component of Alexx V has been re-evaluated and significantly improved."

The most obvious outward change is the inclusion of the WAMM Master Chronosonic's open-architecture gantry, which enhances the overall rigidity of the entire upper-module section and minimizes pressure trapped behind the various enclosures. Easier access to the upper modules makes for quicker adjustments, as does an onboard rechargeable lighting system.

In terms of materials, the Alexx V uses the latest version of Wilson's X-Material in the woofer module, gantry, and upper modules. Wilson S-Material is tightly coupled to each midrange driver, and V-Material is strategically placed at interface points for superior vibration control. V-Material is also found in Wilson's new, high-performance Wilson Audio Acoustic Diode spike system, which the Alexx V uses.

Other important additions include the 7” Alnico QuadraMag midrange driver developed for Chronosonic XVX, which the Alexx V now also uses. Wilson's own AudioCapX-WA capacitors are used throughout the Alexx V's crossovers. The Convergent Synergy Carbon (CSC) tweeter has a new rear-wave chamber, which is 3D printed in-house.

Finally, the accessibility for audiophiles who want to hear the Alexx V may be unprecedented for a speaker of its size and price. As of today, March 29, the date of the speaker's official launch, at least 17 dealers or distributors have pairs of the Alexx V ready for demo.
