Best Dire Straits

September 23, 2022

Marc,

Do you know how the Mobile Fidelity double 45rpm LPs of the Dire Straits catalogue compare to the Warner Brothers LPs cut, I believe, by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering and pressed at RTI?

Jeff Levine

The first, self-titled Dire Straits album and Love Over Gold are still two of the very best-sounding rock recordings ever made. I'm a big fan of the first album and have multiple copies in multiple formats. For sheer resolution, the best version to my ears is the remastered CD, which uses Super Bit Mapping, from about twenty years ago [Warner Bros. 47769] -- no kidding. It captures the greatest amount of tape bleed-through at the beginning of many cuts (check out "Water of Love") and the most musical resolution, even more than the various LPs I have. -Marc Mickelson
