Fixing nicks

July 17, 2021

Marc,

Any suggestions for covering a nick in my cherry-wood speaker cabinet?

Sheldon Simon

For whatever reason, the cost of the equipment or how much I value what it adds to my life, I am often bothered about things like nicks and scrapes more than I think I should be. So I've done a lot of research and work to minimize their visual effect.

For speakers, the easiest way to cover a nick is to see if there is a shoe wax, the stuff that comes in the small metal can, that matches the finish. Put a bit on your finger to warm it up, and then wipe it over the nick. You will probably have to wipe off any excess. Often that will do the trick with speakers that have wood veneer. You can also try the various markers for sale for the same purpose, which may be more useful for matching the finish. In either case, it's wise to test the wax or marker on an unseen area, like the bottom, before putting it on a more easily seen area.

If the damage is more extensive, you can look for a local furniture restorer. Many can fill in large gouges and then paint the area with a brush to match the finish, even wood veneer, so well that it's hard to see the damage afterwards. This will cost you more money, but a couple hundred dollars to repair a multi-thousand-dollar speaker seems reasonable to me.

Finally, if your speaker has a glossy or painted surface, there is a product for guitar repair that I've used. It's called GluBoost, and you can find many videos on YouTube that show its use. If you watch and learn how to use it, you'll find that it's pretty easy to fix your own speaker cabinets (matching the paint may be difficult if it's not black or another standard color that's available). -Marc Mickelson

Marc,

I just discovered your website while reading up on IKEA cutting boards to use as plinths, and I love it. Can you please add me to your e-mail list?
