Too much bass for analog

January 22, 2022

Marc,

I’ve been diving into analog and loving vinyl. I just learned a simple rule perhaps because I’m running dual subs: too much bass with vinyl and the floor vibrations affect the turntable. I realized this after scratching my head and just lowering the bass. That seemed to do it. Are there any other ways to help this? It must be a common problem, I would think. The record sounded like it was vibrating before I adjusted the sub output.

Bass, and especially excessive bass, has always been a potential issue with analog, because an LP is reproduced by micro vibrations -- just what low frequencies can cause in the room. With subs, it is imperative to both adjust them properly -- so you almost don't know they are on -- and isolate them if your floor can propagate vibration. In this regard, I've found some very useful products that are dirt cheap: DiversiTech rubber/cork antivibration pads, used in the HVAC industry. They are available in various sizes, the smaller ones costing less than the larger ones. Here is a link to the 3" x 3" pad.

I have seen these exact items rebranded and sold to audiophiles at a big markup.

These should definitely help with any excessive vibration your subs might be creating. -Marc Mickelson
