Soft ball for IKEA isolation platform?

April 23, 2025

Marc,

I just read your article on using two IKEA Aptitlig cutting boards with bearings between them as an isolation platform. I love the idea, but I am curious if you’ve tried doing this with a bearing made of a soft material. Perhaps stick two of these together to make a sphere?

Robbie Smith

The softest sphere material I've tried is Delrin, and it works well, though I think the harder spheres work best sonically, probably because they help with transfer of energy from one Aptitlig to the other. They also allow the platform to move, if that's useful to you. All that said, I do see 7/16" rubber balls on eBay (7/16" is the ideal diameter for the channel in the Aptitlig cutting boards), although they are expensive for some reason. I'll see if a cheaper alternative exists and give them a try. -Marc Mickelson
