Taking It to the Next Level: Tools for Really Accurate Azimuth Adjustment

wners of VPI JMW tonearms might well like to take advantage of an aftermarket device for adjusting azimuth. The Soundsmith Counter Intuitive (shown below left) is a clever eccentric sleeve that slips over the counterweight of the tonearm, allowing azimuth to be adjusted independently (and repeatably) without altering the tracking force. Given that the JMWs (like most unipivots) employ a sliding as opposed to threaded counterweight, it makes really precise setup considerably easier.

When it comes to judging azimuth, there are a number of different approaches, but recently the Fosgate Fozgometer and the Feickert Adjust+ systems have applied modern technology and signal processing to the problem. Experience with either system will quickly demonstrate that not only is correct azimuth critical to LP replay performance, but that the vast majority of cartridges deviate from accurate vertical orientation of the stylus. Even quite small angular errors will make a readily audible musical difference. You can set azimuth by ear, especially with a little practice, but the Fosgate and Feickert systems take the guesswork out of the equation, delivering reliable and repeatable results. Just make sure that your tonearm allows adjustment of azimuth (or HTA) before parting with your money. As well as Rega and SME, Pro-Ject, Linn, Alphason, Helius and a number of other 'arms don’t -- so if in doubt, check with your dealer or the manufacturer.
