Hardly prolific, but Copland always comes up with something of note when they can be bothered. The CTA506 (UK price is £4498 to give you an idea) is based on the KT120 power tube, which is turning out to be the valve du jour. It’s a new variant of the 6550/KT88 power tube, able to deliver approximately 30% more power than a KT88. A pair of KT120 tubes in push-pull configuration should be good for nearly 200 watts; here, Copland extracts a conservative 90Wpc. The CTA506 push-pull output stages uses of a pair of matched KT120s in fixed ultralinear configuration, with active tube regulation courtesy of two 6550s. The CTA506 is terrific-looking, too, in a handsome chassis fitted with a grooved front panel.
