New "Reference" Speaker from Stenheim

by The Audio Beat | May 15, 2021

ike all of Stenheim's existing Reference models, the new Reference Ultime Two ($150,000 per pair) is a full d’Appolito design with an offset symmetrical driver layout. Internally, the similarities continue, with the passive crossover sharing the same electrical characteristics and component quality as existing designs.

At the heart of the Reference Ultime Two’s performance are the paired 6 1/2" midrange drivers flanking the 1" soft-dome tweeter, the same three drivers and the same layout used in Stenheim's flagship designs. However, while the Reference Ultime Two appears similar to existing models in terms of overall scale and its front-baffle driver array, rather than the two rear-firing bass drivers of the existing Reference Ultime models, the new speaker employs a pair of rear-facing laminar flow reflex ports to load the front-mounted 12” drivers.

The Reference Ultime Two's cabinet is constructed using the same materials and techniques as Stenheim's existing Reference Ultime speakers: CNC-machined aluminum panels and internal baffles, with additional critical bracing; sealed chambers for each midrange, the tweeter and crossover; and the separate bass chambers loaded with rear-facing laminar flow ports.

Frequency response is given as 25Hz to 35kHz, sensitivity as 95dB and nominal impedance as 4 ohms. Each speaker measures 60 1/2"H x 14 1/2"W x 19 7/8"D (1535mm high by 368mm wide by 505mm deep) and weighs 509 pounds (231 kg).
