Open or Closed: New Headphones from Beyerdynamic

eyerdyanmic's DT 700 Pro X and DT 900 Pro X headphones ($299 each) use the company's new STELLAR 45 driver and offer the choice between closed-back (DT 700 Pro X) and open-back (DT 900 Pro X) design. While home-studio, laptop and on-the-go phone or tablet use are suggested, the headphones' driver technology and specifications hint at audiophile aspirations.

The STELLAR 45 driver uses a strong neodymium magnet and a voice coil made of copper-plated wire, along with a three-layer speaker cone with integrated attenuating layer, to produce wide bandwidth (5Hz-40kHz), high output (100dB at 1mW) and an impedance of 48 ohms. Beyerdynamic touts the driver's fast response and detailed transient reproduction, both due to the lightweight voice coil, ensuring "sound without distortion, even at high sound-pressure levels."

Both models come with two mini-XLR cables, velour ear pads and a headband with memory foam for comfort. "There is no feeling of pressure or discomfort, even after several hours of wearing." Almost all of the parts can be replaced, making for long life for both the DT 700 Pro X and DT 900 Pro X, no matter their use or misuse.
