CH Precision used the Munich show to introduce the new C1.2 DAC/controller (top left, $36,000). Unlike the vast majority of companies, CH Precision was actively demonstrating their latest product, not just in comparison with the C1 that it replaces but along with the new D1.5 CD/SACD player/transport ($41,000). The company was tracing the whole digital upgrade path -- or at least the first four steps -- with the CD player gaining an external X1 power supply ($17,000), then the separate DAC and finally, the T1 master clock ($24,700).

Furthermore, in standard CH fashion, any C1 or C1 Mono unit is fully upgradable to C1.2 status, including new product identifier plate, serial number and the latest grounding spikes. Inside, the update involves the replacement of three complete circuit boards, resulting in a four-fold increase in processor power, updated PEtER spline filtering algorithms, discrete local regulation of the DSP and FGPA chips, and full MQA compatibility. Existing input/output option boards (analog in, Ethernet HD, USB or clock sync) can be retained and used in the new chassis.

Musical results were predictably impressive, with the D1.5/X1 pairing performing with presence, authority and an engaging rhythmic agility that brought the phrasing and expressive range of recordings to light. Adding the C1.2 delivered not just more detail and dynamic range, but an even more coherent and significantly more intimate and immediate performance.

As stated, the C1.2 is priced at $36,000 (plus input/output options), while the three-box C1.2 Mono weighs in at $77,000 (plus input/output options). In each case, the upgrade from an existing C1 or C1 Mono unit will cost $4000 -- the difference in price between the old and the new products. Older C1/C1 Monos manufactured before July 2020 will also require the latest 800x480 DPI AMOLED display, at a cost of $1200 -- but then who else is effectively going to give you $30,800 for what might be a ten-year old DAC? Just when CH Precision’s analog electronics seem to be getting all the plaudits, the D1.5/C1.2 pairing appears and restores the balance.
