Shunyata Research Delta-X Power Conditioner

Almost 30 years ago, Caelin Gabriel built his first power conditioner. It was for his own use, because he was dissatisfied with both commercial and professional choices. He turned his attention to designing a power cord soon after and Shunyata Research was born. Today Shunyata Research is one of high-end audios most recognized brands, and the company's power products can be found in home systems, recording studios and even heart-surgery wings of hospitals. Looking at Shunyatas present catalog, you might notice a twofold approach to product development. Some products have seen a series of upgrades, culminating in the newest X designation for their Shunyata's reference line. Other products are designed to be high-performance/high-value lines benefitting from trickle-down technology from the reference line. Two relatively new examples of this are Shunyata's Theta and Gamma lines of power cords, interconnects, and speaker cables.
The Delta-X under review is a horizontal-style power conditioner that borrows heavily from Shunyata's top-of-the-line Everest-X's technology but at a significant reduction in price. It measures 21" wide, 9" deep, and 4" tall, and there are four pairs of AC outlets on the back (for a total of eight individual outlets), a 20-amp input connector, and an electromagnetic breaker switch. There is also a grounding post, presumably for use with Shunyatas Altaira grounding products. Each pair of outlets is surrounded by, what Shunyata calls, Cable Cradles, which give support to the power cords plug. These are particularly helpful in maintaining a solid electrical connection when using large, heavy power cords like some Shunyata makes. I wish more manufacturers would offer something similar, as Ive had some power cords gradually fall out of power conditioners due to the weight of the cable pulling the plug out of the socket.
Every Shunyata product uses numerous construction techniques and materials to combat noise and ensure unimpeded supply of power, and the Delta-X is no exception. TAPc (Transverse Axial Polarizer ) is used in many of Shunyatas top-of-the-line signal and power products. It is described as reducing the effect electromagnetic distortion has on the resolution of audio and video signals. GPNR (Ground Plane Noise Reduction) is a noise-filtering system used to reduce high-frequency interference that pollutes the ground plane of audio and video systems. NIC (Noise Isolation Chamber) uses a ferroelectric substance that reduces high-frequency power-line noise. CCI filters are used to prevent power-supply noise being transmitted from component to component when multiple devices are plugged into the Delta-X.
To address clean power reserves, Shunyata uses two technologies to guarantee full power to connected gear. QR/BB, a patented circuit, provides a local reserve of energy and acts as an instantaneous energy reserve without using coils, transformers or capacitors. DTCD (Dynamic Instantaneous Current Delivery) is Shunyatas measurement technique used to optimize current delivery. Both of these influence transient response, and with at least one of my amps they make it sound more dynamic and powerful.
KPIPv2 (Kinetic Phase Inversion Process) is a four-day-long process that dramatically reduces burn-in time and significantly improves sonic performance. I remember some of the earlier Shunyata power cords and signal cables needing quite some time to sound their best, so Im happy to report that the Delta-X sounded great right out of the box, needing no extra burn-in period.
The power cord supplied for the Delta-X was a 20-amp Alpha-X and that was plugged into the dedicated outlet in my listening room. The Alpha-X also uses TAPc technology for noise reduction, and the VTX-Ag wire used within the power cord combines a center conductor of pure silver surrounded by a concentric ring of pure copper, which is felt to provide the best of both worlds. It is noteworthy that the copper used is OFE, which is the only grade of copper that carries a written certification of purity. The Alpha-X includes Gen3NR, which is their latest version of power-line noise reduction that was developed specifically for heart-surgery labs. Besides lowering noise, Gen3NR also improves the Alpha-X power cords transient speed and transparency.
Power cords (other than my references) in use with the Delta-X were Shunyatas Theta NR. The Theta NR and Alpha-X use the same VTX-Ag geometry, but the conductors are just 10 gauge in Theta NR and 8 gauge in Alpha. Alpha-X also uses Shunyata's reference-level CopperCONN (pure copper) connectors and implements the TAPc technology that sits at the center of Shunyata's X generation of products. All power cords are exposed to KPIPv2 treatment.
When a company releases new products, its good to assess which core sonic qualities remain unchanged and which qualities have been improved upon. Since its inception, Shunyata Research has emphasized noise reduction, so its no surprise that my system's sound using the Delta-X was quiet and smooth. The word grainless frequently came to mind. Noise frequently presents itself as a spiky or gritty treble, but there were no treble issues. The lack of extraneous noise also made images stand out more clearly in the soundstage and the silence between notes was enhanced. This extra bit of silence made quick musical passages easier to hear, allowing me to concentrate on the instrumental lines in densely scored music.
A second Shunyata design emphasis has been on efficient power delivery. This had a recognizable effect on the transient attacks of all the amps used for this review. The amp that most benefitted was the lowest-power amp I own -- the Yamamoto A-08. Nominally a 2-watt amp, it only generates 1 watt into my Altec Valencias 16-ohm load. This amp will never be a powerhouse, nor will it ever be my first choice for everyday listening, but connected to the Delta-X, the little Yamamotos sound was punchy and even had a touch of bass slam. Ive owned this amp for nearly a decade and tried a number of power products with it, but I dont remember hearing such energy in its sound.
If Shunyatas design goals of noise reduction and unimpeded power delivery are still present in this new power conditioner, I wondered what aspect of sound might have been improved upon. The difference I noticed with the addition of the Delta-X was a substantial improvement in midrange clarity. While I dont own any recent models of Shunyata wiring, Im very familiar with the Shunyata house sound. Many of my local audio friends have used Shunyata wiring and power conditioning for many years. Granted, my system is vastly different than my friends systems, but to my ears, the Delta-X produced a clearer midrange than Ive experienced. Ill list three musical examples below that demonstrate the new midrange transparency I was hearing.
Jacques Loussier Trios inventive jazz arrangements of classical music are some of my favorite sets of recordings. Most of his releases on the Telarc label are clear and clean, with potent bass and some explosive percussion hits. For me, the exception to that rule has been his Play Debussy [Telarc 16 bits/44.1kHz on Qobuz]. Ive always thought the piano was cloudy, with a noticeable halo around its sound. Additionally, the piano image was indistinct in the soundstage. With the addition of the Delta-X, I heard clarity in the piano for the first time, with a solid image slightly to the left of center. When I e-mailed Grant Samuelson, marketing and sales manager for Shunyata, about this, he remarked that I was probably hearing the greater noise reduction theyve achieved with the Delta-X. Greater noise reduction should translate to better overall transparency, and thats exactly what I was hearing. The improved imaging might be best described as a de-blurring of the piano. I had originally thought the Debussy album was less faithfully recorded, but the addition of the Delta-X allowed me to more fully enjoy it.
A reduction in noise can do more than improve clarity. It can also solve some issues detracting from a musical performances emotional impact. Anouar Brahems latest release, After the Last Sky [ECM 24 bits/96kHz on Qobuz] has all the sonic hallmarks of a good ECM recording: clear soundstaging, deep bass, quick percussive response, and smooth treble. Musically, this album is relaxed and introspective, in contrast to the upbeat rhythms and melodies of his popular The Astounding Eyes of Rita [ECM 24 bits/96kHz on Qobuz]. As much as I enjoy After the Last Sky, I have failed to connect with the contribution of Anja Lechners cello on Remembering Hind. This cut was composed as a remembrance for a young girl killed in a battle zone and, oddly, the cello performance lacked enough emotion to match the gravity and sadness of the subject. Revisiting that track after installing the Delta-X, I heard the cello sound fully engaged. What previously was a generic cello tone was now heard with strong vibrato, Lechners bowing technique varied in speed and intensity to emphasize the anguish of the melodic line. The tone quality was enhanced, with a nice bloom of the cellos wooden body. It would not have occurred to me that power conditioning could change my opinion of a recording to such a degree.
My final musical example is Peter and the Wolf with Andre Previn narrating and conducting The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra [Telarc 16 bits/44.1kHz on Qobuz]. This entire performance is very satisfying, but I would draw your attention specifically to the Introduction section of the piece. Previn introduces each instrument or group of instruments that will be used to portray characters in the story. With the Delta-X, the woodwinds had a particularly realistic tone and each instrument excited the halls acoustic in a slightly different manner, with clear ambient air around each soloist. The flute sound generated more reverberation than either the oboe or clarinet, just as it might in a good performance hall. The massed strings were smooth and the horn section was particularly well portrayed. And, since I previously mentioned Shunyatas design goal of unimpeded dynamic swings, at the end of the introduction, when the percussion mimics the guns of the hunters, Telarc didnt skimp on the low-end power of the timpani and bass drum.
At the end of the review period I tried a quick experiment to confirm what I was hearing. I connected my Wattson DAC/Streamer to my Stax electrostatic headphone amp and used one Theta NR power cord to power the Stax amplifier. I listened to the three previously mentioned recordings and found that the audible improvements with headphones were similar to those mentioned when using my full system. For the experiment, I changed two things; the Theta NR used on the Stax headphone amp was replaced with a simply designed but well-made braided power cord, and that cord was plugged into an audiophile-grade power strip plugged directly into the wall receptacle. I listened to the recordings again and noticed what had changed.
With the braided power cord, hall reverb and ambience on the Previn recording was increased in an almost Technicolor way. Lower treble notes were pushed forward slightly, but in a pleasant way. This was the type of presentation that might initially impress listeners in a showroom, but the accentuated ambience did not sound at all natural. I had just returned from a trumpet conference at the Eastman School of Music, and of the schools three recital halls, the Kilbourn Recital Hall had the best mixture of direct and reflected sound. The conference presented many recitals in that hall, and I noticed that the soloists direct tone in the hall mixed with floor bounce off the hardwood stage. The halls reverb began from behind the soloist and then wrapped around the audience from the side walls of the hall. This integration of reverb and direct tone is what the Theta NR did so well in the Previn recording and what the inexpensive power cord power strip missed.
Many decades ago my audio mentor advised me that while system wiring was important, it only accounted for the final 5-10% of the sound. His argument was that until you had the right speakers for your musical taste driven by the right electronics in an acoustically treated room, you would never be able to achieve your goals. Only after addressing those primary issues would wiring choice help you dial in your best sound.
After spending time with the Delta-X (and the Alpha-X and
Theta NR power cords), Ill amend that sage advice: your gear will not achieve its
peak performance without clean power conditioning, and you need to address this
issue near the beginning of your effort to build an audio system. There are many options
for power conditioning and management from many great companies, but Shunyata
Researchs Delta-X might be the best choice you can make. With it, you'll be able to
hear all that your sources, electronics, and speakers have to offer.![]()
